Orchestral Open Day – Sunday 16 May

Orchestral Open Day – Sunday 16 May

Caterham School’s annual Orchestral Open Day will be run online this year on Sunday 16 May and promises an exciting day of music-making with talks and masterclasses given by special guests including musicians from the London Symphony Orchestra. This event is free of charge for all participants.

Young musicians (Grades 3+) are invited to participate in this fun and enjoyable online event, from home.  Music scores will be sent in advance to be practiced in preparation for your recording that will be included in our virtual orchestra.

TALKS, DEMONSTRATIONS & MASTERCLASSES

This year, we have chosen professionals from the London Symphony Orchestra who will talk about their musical careers including their experiences of recording film music soundtracks such as Harry Potter and Star Wars, and will offer a question and answer session, giving advice on practise and hints and tips on how to progress.

Additionally, chosen soloists (Grades 6-8) will receive a masterclass on their instrument from one of our professionals and their performance will be shown in the virtual concert. (see section below for more information)

CREATING OUR VIRTUAL ORCHESTRA

All participants will be sent appropriate music in advance and will be asked to practise it in preparation for the Orchestral Open Day. Following sectional rehearsals with our experts, participants will be asked to record their individual part on the day and send it to us so that it can be included in our virtual orchestra. The final performance will be available later on in the summer term.

This wonderful Orchestral Open Day will provide:

  • Advice from some of London’s leading orchestral musicians
  • Opportunity to work with other young musicians online
  • Detailed and precise advice on technique
  • Exploring new repertoire
  • Experience in recording your performance from home

ADDITIONAL MASTERCLASS INFORMATION

This part of the day is designed to allow selected musicians to receive detailed advice about performance and technique. If you would like your child to be considered for this please do indicate on the form. If your child is not receiving a masterclass, they will be invited to observe those who are. This is beneficial to all musicians and should be an enjoyable part of the day. Please note that places for masterclasses will be limited.
