Spittlebugs and the great outdoors with Year 2!

Year 2 have enjoyed learning about these amazing creatures this week. They were astonished to discover that the white substance that Spittlebugs surround themselves with is called ‘cuckoo spit’. These bugs surround themselves with this substance while they are still growing to protect themselves from predators, baby Spittlebugs are called nymphs and adult Spittlebugs are called froghoppers. The children were amazed to find out that the white bubbles is made of urine and air from the Spittlebugs abdomen. They also learned that Spittlebugs drink the sap from plants. We then went on a Spittlebug hunt.
