Lab at Lunch – Where Curiosity Leads the Way!
The Prep Science Lab has thrown open its doors every lunch break for fun, hands-on, multi-discipline club sessions where children of all ages from Years 3 to 6 are invited to play and learn by experience and experimentation. The key theme throughout is: ‘You try it!’
On offer each lunchtime is a free choice flow of activities ranging from electronics kits, motorised marble runs, freedom-form construction kits, bridge and tower sets, engineering road and train tracks, building materials, pop up and lift the flap science and STEM books, science and nature Top Trumps cards, space and general science knowledge games collections, balance instruments and pattern machines…to name but a few things to try! The sessions are being run so each year group gets a day to enjoy the sessions.
One of the best things about Lab at Lunch, is that it is the children themselves who actively choose to come and engage in the lab’s resources with Mrs Hills-Matthews. We are so lucky at Caterham Prep to have such a great bunch of budding scientists – since the club started at the beginning of term, almost 80% of all the Prep School children have signed up to join in!
As a result of its popularity, children are currently being invited on a three-week rota and if anyone misses their turn, they are warmly invited to join in the next day.
It really is a joy to see how fascinated the children are as they get fully immersed in solo or group projects groups with the STEM materials.
