Year 4 Investigate the Food Chain with The Gruffalo’s Help!
Do you know who this describes?
‘He has terrible tusks, and terrible claws
And terrible teeth in his terrible jaws’…
‘He has knobbly knees, and turned-out toes
And a poisonous wart at the end of his nose’…
‘His eyes are orange, his tongue is black
He has purple prickles all over his back’…
Year 4 scientists could certainly tell you as they investigated Julia Donaldson’s Gruffalo and its food chain in the Deep Dark Wood this week!
Amongst such delicacies as ‘scrambled snake’, ‘owl ice cream’, ‘roasted fox’ and ‘mouse on bread’ Year 4 put together food chains and webs involving the characters of the book and other woodland creatures that may form part of the intricate balance in real life.
We worked either on iPad or paper, depending on our preference, and used extra organisms such as hedgehogs, worms, badgers, squirrels to add more detail to the food webs and practice putting the energy arrows in the right places. It was an enjoyable activity and the pupils created some excellent work.
