The Wright Society Annual Medicine Lecture 2026

PLASTIC SURGERY – RECONSTRUCTION & ROBOTS

Join us on Monday 2 March at 7pm in the Humphrey’s Theatre.

We are thrilled to be joined by Mr Edmund Fitzgerald O’Connor as our guest speaker for our ever popular medical lecture.

Mr Edmund Fitzgerald O’Connor is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon who specialises in complex injury reconstruction after trauma and caring for patients who have undergone major injuries or limb loss. Learn more.

He recently appeared with his team in the Netflix documentary Critical, which follows the inner workings of the Major Trauma Network in London.

His work combines advanced surgical techniques with innovative technologies, including the growing role of robotics in amputee rehabilitation. Mr Fitzgerald O’Connor trained in leading trauma centres across the UK, Europe and Australia, developing expertise in microsurgery, trauma reconstruction and patient-centred care.
He now leads a multidisciplinary reconstructive surgery team at Kings College Hospital and Guy & St Thomas’ helping people rebuild function, confidence and independence after life-changing events. The team covers a population of around 7 million from south east London all the way to the south coast of Kent and Sussex.

Alongside his clinical work, he is passionate about teaching the next generation of doctors and surgeons. He regularly speaks to students about the realities, challenges and rewards of surgical careers.

He believes that curiosity, compassion and teamwork are just as important as technical skill, and hopes to inspire young people to explore the exciting, fast-moving world of modern medicine and surgical innovation.
