Dynamite Dave wows!

The Prep School were treated to lots of whizzes, bangs, flames, foams, colour changes, flying toilet roll, boiling dry ice, smoke, smiles and cheers as Dynamite Dave from Sublime Science took to the stage.

Every year group from Reception to Year 6 enjoyed the shows which took us on a whistle stop tour of chemical reactions and physical phenomena.
Particularly enjoyed was the Bernoulli effect in full force using a straw, hairdryer then a leaf blower! The Bernoulli effect can be explained when air particles act like a crowd of tiny invisible people rushing around, when the air moves slowly it pushes like a crowded group leaning on you, but when air moves quickly it pushes like fewer people running past, without bumping into you as much. It is how aeroplanes fly using shaped wings. The air over the top of the wing has to travel over a longer, domed path so moves faster and creates less force down, while the air underneath the wing travels straight and moves slower and creates more push up – both combined, this creates lift. Dynamite Dave took this principle first to a table tennis ball, then a mini football and finally to a giant beach ball, floating and steering high above the heads of the audience.

Everyone learned so many facts and skills that could be applied to their science lessons, including Year 6 who are currently looking at acids and alkalis and witnessed almost magician-like tricks with the indicator phenylethylene which turns bright pink in alkali and totally colourless in acid.
The shows were entertaining and informative and captured our imaginations. A big thank you to Dynamite Dave and all the team at Sublime Science.
