Prep take on the London Mini Marathon

Prep take on the London Mini Marathon

With preparations in full flow for the marathon the following day, on Saturday 25 April attention turned to the children and an estimated 22,000 young runners would hits the streets, taking part in either the 1 mile of 2.6km course. We were very excited to have twenty-five Caterham Prep children participating in the 1 mile race. The course follows the final mile of the London marathon with children running past Buckingham Palace and through the famous finish line down The Mall at Horse Guards Parade…the same finish line that would see Sabastian Sawe break the 2 hour barrier for the first time in marathon race history!

The sun was shining, the children were excited and they were ready to take on the challenge. After a motivating warm up from Joe Wicks and Daddy Pig, they were off! All those running club sessions paid off and they zoomed around the course (at blistering speed for some including Tahlia, who was the first Caterham Prep child to cross the line is an amazing time of 6:47) and any time I was fortunate enough to see them, you could not miss their smiling faces. All children did sensationally well and hopefully they’ll think about doing the main marathon in years to come.

Charity sits at the heart of the London Marathon, with over £1.4 billion raised since it first started in 1981 and each year, it brings an opportunity to fundraise for much needed charities. Some of our children did just that for some very worthy causes. Cora and Josie raised £585 for The Make Way Foundation, Christopher raised £1,100 for British Dyslexia Association, Anaya raised £1,870 for Meningitis Now, Lucas raised £750 for Sepsis Research FEAT and Sophia raised £200 for The Make Way Foundation and Macmillan. In total, that is £4,505 raised!

A huge well done to all the children and fingers crossed, we can go again next year.
