Author Lucy Strange Inspires Ahead of Library Launch
Great excitement was in the air this week ahead the opening of our Prep library. As part of the celebrations we welcomed best-selling children’s author, Lucy Strange to Caterham to spend the day with us. In the morning, Lucy, a former actor and teacher, gave two engaging workshops for Years 3 to 6 focusing on two of her most popular books that had the children completely spellbound. She spoke about her stories, about the importance of reading, researching, writing and then editing her work. The children were excited to step into an writer’s world and learn more about Lucy’s life, her inspiration for writing and her other books that she has written, all of which are currently in the Prep School library. Lucy shared that her novels are published all over the world and the children were fascinated to learn that it is not just the language of the story that sometimes changes but also the artwork on the cover and inside the book that vary dramatically from country to country.
We were delighted to be joined by pupils from Copthorne Prep, The Hawthorns and Furzefield Primary School and share this wonderful opportunity. In the afternoon, Lucy joined Mr Purkiss, our librarians and pupils from Years 5 & 6 to officially open our new library. She gave an inspiring speech and emphasised how fortunate we are to have such a wonderful reading space whilst so many schools are reducing them.
Following Lucy’s visit, many children were buzzing with new ideas for their creative writing and we can’t wait to see the results. By the following day almost all of her books were borrowed from the library! What an inspiration – thanks Lucy!
