Beddington Energy Recovery Facility
Year 4 recently enjoyed a fascinating and informative visit to the Beddington Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) as part of their learning about sustainability, waste management and renewable energy. The trip provided a valuable opportunity for the pupils to see first-hand how science and environmental responsibility work together in the real world.
During the visit, pupils learned how non-recyclable waste is safely processed and converted into energy to power local homes and businesses. They were introduced to the journey waste takes once it arrives at the facility, from delivery and sorting to combustion and energy generation. The pupils were particularly interested to discover how the process helps to significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, supporting a cleaner and more sustainable community.
The visit also reinforced the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling wherever possible. Through engaging presentations and discussions, the pupils explored how their everyday choices can have a real impact on the environment. They asked thoughtful questions and demonstrated an excellent understanding of how energy recovery fits into wider efforts to tackle climate change.
We were incredibly proud of how Year 4 represented the school. Their curiosity, enthusiasm and exemplary behaviour were commented on by the staff at the facility. The trip was a fantastic way to bring classroom learning to life and deepen the pupil’s understanding of environmental responsibility.
Well done Year 4, for embracing this opportunity and continuing to think carefully about how we can all contribute to a more sustainable future.
