Building Life Skills Through Books

Building Life Skills Through Books

At a time when national surveys suggest that reading for pleasure is steadily declining among young people, our Pre-Prep pupils are proudly bucking the trend! Here at school, reading isn’t just a timetabled activity, it’s a daily habit, a shared joy, and a cornerstone of early learning.

Every day, our youngest learners settle into stories, explore new worlds, and build the rich vocabulary and comprehension skills that set them up for success across the entire curriculum. Research consistently shows that children who develop strong reading habits early on benefit not only academically, but also socially and emotionally. They become more confident communicators, more imaginative thinkers, and more independent learners.

It is heartening, therefore, to see our youngest pupils eagerly choosing books, recommending favourites stories to their friends, and showing such enthusiasm during reading sessions and throughout the day. Whether they are diving into picture books, listening to stories read aloud, or sounding out new words with growing confidence, their passion is unmistakable, and utterly wonderful to witness.

In Pre-Prep, we remain committed to nurturing this love of reading. By celebrating books, fostering curiosity, and encouraging children to explore stories both familiar and new, we are helping them develop habits that will support them well beyond their early years.  In a world full of distractions, our young readers are proving that stories still have the power to inspire, comfort, and spark joy. Long may it continue!

And don’t forget to look out for Mrs Jackson’s Christmas Reading Challenge next week too, to keep you and your little ones reading during the holidays!
