Chickens Aren’t the Only Ones Who Lay Eggs!
All the children in Pre-Prep had the opportunity to go on an Easter egg hunt and enjoy some Easter fun. The children worked in teams or in pairs to find the plastic eggs hidden in the Outdoor Classroom. The Year 2 children were looking so carefully that they found a real egg on the floor which had hatched from a nearby nest. The egg was blue-green with reddish-brown speckles, which indicated it might have belonged to a Blackbird.
After the hunt the children were intrigued to learn about oviparous animals. These are animal species that reproduce by laying eggs, where the embryo develops outside the mother’s body, nourished by a yolk rather than direct maternal connection. This group includes all birds, most fish, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. While rare, some mammals, like the platypus and echidna, are also oviparous.
