Exploring the World of AI: Engaging Lessons for Years 3-6

Over the next few weeks, our Digital Innovation lessons will delve into the fascinating world of Artificial Intelligence (AI), exploring how it helps us in our daily lives and the challenges it brings.

The world of Artificial Intelligence is expanding rapidly, and our children in Years 3-6 are about to embark on an exciting journey to learn more about it. In the upcoming ‘How can AI help us?’ unit, pupils will be introduced to recent and upcoming developments in AI technology, such as ChatGPT, Midjourney, and the new Bing. They will discuss the applications of these tools, from 3D object scanning to plant and animal identification, and even mathematics assistance.

In addition to learning about the technology itself, pupils will be encouraged to debate the ethical and legal implications of AI, as well as the risks and mitigations in place to ensure our safety. Throughout the unit, they will have the chance to test these technologies under supervision*, gaining hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of AI’s strengths, weaknesses, and potential issues.

The lessons will cover a range of topics, including using AI for safe and responsible research, employing AI image generation tools, and utilising AI as a Copilot in app development. By exploring the basics of AI, its applications, and its role in collaboration, our young learners will develop a comprehensive understanding of this fast-evolving field, preparing them for the future.

* Please note that the age limit for individual personal accounts for most of these services (and indeed most apps and games in general) is 13, but they can be used by children when supervised by an adult.
