Curiosity, Connection, and Confidence

Curiosity, Connection, and Confidence

In 2026, the UK and Caterham School will be celebrating the National Year of Reading – a nationwide invitation to fall back in love with books, stories, and the simple magic of reading together.

For all children, but particularly our youngest pupils, stories are so much more than words on a page. They spark imagination, build confidence, grow vocabulary, and open doors to new worlds. Whether it’s a bedtime picture book, a funny poem, a familiar favourite or a brand-new adventure, every shared story helps children see reading as something to enjoy, not just something to learn.

Throughout the year, schools, libraries, and communities will be shining a spotlight on reading for pleasure, reminding us that even a few minutes with a book can make a big difference. Curling up together, laughing at characters, wondering what happens next, all these moments matter. You don’t need to be an expert reader or have shelves full of books. A single story, read aloud, talked about, and enjoyed together, is a wonderful place to start.

The National Year of Reading is about curiosity, connection, and confidence. We hope it inspires families to pick up a book, turn a page, and discover just how powerful stories can be, together.

More details coming soon.  Happy reading!
