Pet Plant Adoption Scheme
Children across the prep school have been getting their hands delightfully dirty thanks to the new Pet Plant Adoption Scheme that is already bringing greenery and excitement into classrooms.
Every class has been invited to adopt two “pet plants” of their own. Representatives from each form visited Mrs Hills-Matthews’ plant nursery in the lab to choose their class plants, carefully selecting new leafy companions to care for throughout the term and beyond. The school is especially grateful to Amelie in Year 4 and her family, who kindly donated a large number of the plants to help make the scheme possible.
Once adopted, each plant arrives with everything needed for its new home: a sticky, chemical-free yellow butterfly to protect it from pests, a saucer, a name tag and a small watering can. The children are already taking their responsibilities seriously. Many classes have begun naming their plant pets, planning how to decorate their pots and deciding on the perfect sunny (or shady) spot in their classrooms.
In the coming days, pupils will also be researching the species of their plants to learn what conditions they enjoy and what they definitely don’t! Classes are even creating care rotas so that willing volunteers can take the plants home during school holidays to ensure they continue to thrive.
The project is a wonderful way to encourage responsibility, curiosity and teamwork, while also supporting pupils’ wellbeing. With so many young gardeners already showing enthusiasm, the Pet Plant Adoption Scheme is helping many small fingers turn very green indeed.
