Piers Joins Surrey Cross Country Development Squad

During the half-term holidays, Piers (Year 6 pupil and Cross Country Club runner) was invited by the Surrey Schools Athletics Association to train with the Surrey Cross Country Development Squad at the ACS International School in Cobham. It involved practicing skills and taking instruction on mobility, flexibility, sports psychology and endurance power on the track, in the field and in the pool for resistance training with aqua jogging!

The trainers were really very helpful and inspiring and included Julian Goater (1981 National XC Champion), Jessie Knight (2020 British 400m Hurdles Champion, Olympian and International athlete), Steve Green (British Olympic Association Conditioning and Fitness Specialist) and Mara Yamauchi (second fastest British woman over the Marathon).

The training was then put to the test in the first match of the Border League Cross Country in Maidenhead on Sunday. Piers was really lucky with the weather as the rain held off and he pushed on through the pack to come 17th out of a packed field of competitors. He ran as part of the U11 team for Reigate Priory and as a result of the boys digging deep through some very steep, muddy terrain, they were placed in the top 3 teams of the day.

Well done to Piers and his sisters Lisette (Second Year) and Eloise (Third Year) who also competed and were personally placed in the top 10 and top 20.
