Reception Takes Off with Swifts
This week the Reception children have enjoyed learning about migration. They have talked about the differences between hibernation and migration. We then focused on Swifts; these are birds that migrate. The children were astounded to learn so many interesting Swift facts! Swifts can fly up to 70 miles per hour and can cover up to 500 miles per day. Swifts do not land even to sleep, they take their naps at 3000 metres high, they do this by allowing one side of their brain to sleep while the other half keeps them flying. They then swap sides, so both halves of their brain get a rest. Swift chicks are very greedy; they can eat as much as 40 meals per day! A Swift can catch more than 50,000 insects per day. The children all enjoyed looking in the sky to see if they could spot any Swifts, but we couldn’t see any. The children all decided they must have migrated to Africa already.
