Tackling Ash Dieback in Old Park Woods
Whilst humans have been tackling Covid-19 our UK trees have had their own challenge with the continuing onslaught of Ash Dieback. Unfortunately, Old Park Woods has not escaped this now common disease and recent necessary work has meant clearance of all affected Ash trees from the section of the woods adjacent to the Prep School and work is ongoing to clear areas within 15 metres of the edge of the woodland near buildings and roads.
Whilst it is unfortunate that so many of our Ash trees need to be removed, the regeneration of Old Park Wood as a treasured outdoor space continues. Our work includes introducing increased diversity of native trees in place of the Ash including oak, birch, hazel, beech and cherry, which will help the long-term sustainability of the woodland.
With Spring just beginning to show its welcome shoots, the season’s new leafage and new planting plans will help secure the woods as a space the school community can cherish and enjoy in the future.
