Year 4’s Adventure to Leeds Castle
Year 4 enjoyed a fantastic day out in the sunshine during their exciting trip to Leeds Castle. The day was filled with history, discovery, and plenty of fun as the children explored one of England’s most beautiful and historic castles, to coincide with their global topic “Who is in charge of Great Britain”.
One of the main highlights was the “Cave to Castle” workshop, where pupils took a journey through time – beginning in the Stone Age and travelling all the way to the modern era. Each child had a chance to dress up and take on a historical role, bringing the different time periods to life through drama and storytelling. From prehistoric hunters to medieval nobles, the children fully embraced their characters and learned how people lived, worked, and built their homes through the ages.
During their tour of the castle, the children were fascinated to learn how Leeds Castle has changed over the centuries. They discovered that King Henry VIII ordered major renovations so that he and his first wife, Katherine of Aragon, could stay in greater comfort. They also learned about the castle’s transformation under Lady Baillie in the 20th century, who turned it into a glamorous residence perfect for entertaining guests and throwing lavish parties.
The pupils were amazed by the different styles of architecture and décor as they moved from room to room, each reflecting a different era in the castle’s long and colourful history.
Another favourite stop was the Dog Collar Museum, home to an unusual and entertaining collection that sparked plenty of curiosity and amusement. The children also had great fun navigating the castle’s maze that they had based their digital projects on this term – there was lots of laughter (and a few dead ends!) before everyone made it to the middle.
It was a great day full of sunshine, adventure, and learning! Well done Year 4!
